Introducing our Homegrown FreQs 2012 national judges:

Phetsta (Technique Recordings)

Phetsta burst onto the Drum & Bass scene in 2005 when he signed exclusively to the legendary Drumsound & Bassline Smith‘s imprint Technique Recordings. The Australian producer quickly carved his own sound within the genre with early releases such as Intergalactic and Blur (Mixmag’s tune of the month – May 2006).

In 2007 Phetsta released the acclaimed Congo EP, Knowledge Magazine calling it a “production masterpiece”. The four track extended player cracked the top ten on BBC Radio 1′s Drum & Bass charts. Phetsta show cased his versatility by slowing things down to 130 bpm for a guest single on Aquasky‘s label Passenger Recordings.

In 2008 he released From My Eyes, which received significant Radio 1 support from Annie Mac. and held onto a top ten position on Drum ‘n’ Bass Arena for eight weeks straight. Phetsta also teamed up with fellow Perth based producer Shock One to unleash the award winning (PDMA Track of the Year 2008) single The Sun. The duo also collaborated with London based Metrik on the dance floor tear out True Believer which featured on Shock One’s self titled extended player on Viper Recordings.

2009 proved successful again with Phetsta & Shock One’s Cyclones gaining day time rotation on Australia’s Triple J, including a top three placing on Super Request. Their next single The Sun 2009 has also received significant airplay as well as television support on ABC Australia’s video clip show Rage.

Phetsta’s DJ skills have seen him tour both nationally and overseas, including two eight week long sell out tours of Europe and one in The United States. His music has found its way into the record boxes of the likes of Pendulum, Grooverider, Andy C and Annie Mac.

Jonny Hooves (Shapeshifter, Increase Audio)

Fluent as a DJ, studio producer, drummer and live sound engineer, for John Clayton aka Hooves, music has been a lifelong engagement. Based in Melbourne, Australia, the native New Zealander worked his way through the genres of funk, soul, jazz, hip-hop and heavy metal, before diving deep into the drum and bass scene in the mid 2000s.

Since then Hooves has released several 12″ singles on drum and bass labels oBSEsessions and State of Mind Music, remixed for Pitch Black and Benny Tones, and collaborated on songs with the likes of TREi, State Of Mind and Borderline. Alongside this he serves as drummer to some of New Zealands biggest bands, and handles live sound for a multitude of acts across Australia. Throughout these works he’s developed a reputation for widescreen production, iron clad rhythms, challenging melodies, heavyweight bass line pressure and massive sonic fidelity.

For the last few years, outside of this lane, Hooves has been paying closer attention to dubstep, house, modern beat music and techno. Over the last eighteen months, he’s found the influence of these forms filtering into his own production. Pulling the song tempo down from drum and bass to 140 bpm, he’s been constructing a new musical headspace for himself.

Within this intersection point, Hooves is creating club tempo electronic soul music equal parts raw and challenging. Filling in the gaps where he sees them, his new songs hang around arrangements which constantly ride the line between experimental and accessible, always searching for the sweet spot. Folding world music referencing percussion into techno rhythms, he steps away from the tear-out drones of contemporary club music and the generic arcade game bleeps of contemporary beat music, finding new sounds for new times.

Having recently established his own record label Increase Audio (distributed by Triplevision), Hooves’ is kicking his new direction off with his Back From The Brink EP release. Alongside this he is scouting for talent to release via Increase Audio and preparing his own unique live show. When you let go of everything, the flip side is the opportunity to have everything. Listen while Hooves turns it up; watch the ride.
