Homoegrown FreQs

Homegrown FreQs 2012 – The Australian national DnB Mixing competition – We’ve had over 100 entries and after 6 regional finals our judges have picked the final 6 who will compete for the title of Australia’s Homegrown FreQ for 2012.

This year we are letting you, the supporters, have a say on who wins the title Homegrown FreQ 2012 along with our 3 national judges.

Introducing our Homegrown FreQs 2012 national judges:

Phetsta (Technique Recordings)

Phetsta burst onto the Drum & Bass scene in 2005 when he signed exclusively to the legendary Drumsound & Bassline Smith‘s imprint Technique Recordings. The Australian producer quickly carved his own sound within the genre with early releases such as Intergalactic and Blur (Mixmag’s tune of the month – May 2006).

In 2007 Phetsta released the acclaimed Congo EP, Knowledge Magazine calling it a “production masterpiece”. The four track extended player cracked the top ten on BBC Radio 1′s Drum & Bass charts. Phetsta show cased his versatility by slowing things down to 130 bpm for a guest single on Aquasky‘s label Passenger Recordings.

In 2008 he released From My Eyes, which received significant Radio 1 support from Annie Mac. and held onto a top ten position on Drum ‘n’ Bass Arena for eight weeks straight. Phetsta also teamed up with fellow Perth based producer Shock One to unleash the award winning (PDMA Track of the Year 2008) single The Sun. The duo also collaborated with London based Metrik on the dance floor tear out True Believer which featured on Shock One’s self titled extended player on Viper Recordings.

2009 proved successful again with Phetsta & Shock One’s Cyclones gaining day time rotation on Australia’s Triple J, including a top three placing on Super Request. Their next single The Sun 2009 has also received significant airplay as well as television support on ABC Australia’s video clip show Rage.

Phetsta’s DJ skills have seen him tour both nationally and overseas, including two eight week long sell out tours of Europe and one in The United States. His music has found its way into the record boxes of the likes of Pendulum, Grooverider, Andy C and Annie Mac.

Jonny Hooves (Shapeshifter, Increase Audio)

Fluent as a DJ, studio producer, drummer and live sound engineer, for John Clayton aka Hooves, music has been a lifelong engagement. Based in Melbourne, Australia, the native New Zealander worked his way through the genres of funk, soul, jazz, hip-hop and heavy metal, before diving deep into the drum and bass scene in the mid 2000s.

Since then Hooves has released several 12″ singles on drum and bass labels oBSEsessions and State of Mind Music, remixed for Pitch Black and Benny Tones, and collaborated on songs with the likes of TREi, State Of Mind and Borderline. Alongside this he serves as drummer to some of New Zealands biggest bands, and handles live sound for a multitude of acts across Australia. Throughout these works he’s developed a reputation for widescreen production, iron clad rhythms, challenging melodies, heavyweight bass line pressure and massive sonic fidelity.

For the last few years, outside of this lane, Hooves has been paying closer attention to dubstep, house, modern beat music and techno. Over the last eighteen months, he’s found the influence of these forms filtering into his own production. Pulling the song tempo down from drum and bass to 140 bpm, he’s been constructing a new musical headspace for himself.

Within this intersection point, Hooves is creating club tempo electronic soul music equal parts raw and challenging. Filling in the gaps where he sees them, his new songs hang around arrangements which constantly ride the line between experimental and accessible, always searching for the sweet spot. Folding world music referencing percussion into techno rhythms, he steps away from the tear-out drones of contemporary club music and the generic arcade game bleeps of contemporary beat music, finding new sounds for new times.

Having recently established his own record label Increase Audio (distributed by Triplevision), Hooves’ is kicking his new direction off with his Back From The Brink EP release. Alongside this he is scouting for talent to release via Increase Audio and preparing his own unique live show. When you let go of everything, the flip side is the opportunity to have everything. Listen while Hooves turns it up; watch the ride.

Tommy Dub (CUE Recordings)

Tommy Dub’s heart beats at 174bpm, the Cue Recordings label owner was born and raised in the Australasian home of Drum and Bass, Perth, but now proudly calls Melbourne home since moving over after a years stint in the UK.

With signings from up and coming stars Fred V, Grafix and Squash, CUE is slowly entering the minds, ears and hearts of listeners all over the globe and Tommy Dub looks to push these sounds even further and has found lots of support from established artists like Logistics, Netsky, Grooverider, Mutated Forms, Shockone & Phetsta to help spread the upbeat liquid sounds CUE is quickly becoming recognised for.

With a real passion for tight, fast and in-key mixing, Tommy Dub takes his listeners on energetic journeys through the full spectrum of Drum and Bass, with tearing out dance-floor anthems to deep dark bass-line rollers filling most track listings, you can expect to hear the full 360 when witnessing the audio delight of Tommy Dub in session.

With online mixes for the UKF podcast which reached no.3 in the worlds most downloaded dance podcasts, and his own Cue Recordings studio mixes, Tommy Dub has created an army of online listeners and has transcended this following to live shows across Australia and is now ready to infiltrate the scene here in Melbourne.

With 2011 already shaping to be the breakthrough year for Cue Recordings, make sure you keep an eye on its owner as he looks to introduce himself to a dance floor near you.

Dysphemic & Miss Eliza

Ever wondered what a violin making sweet, sweet love to a sub-woofer sounds like? How about Bach on MDMA? Or maybe you’re partial to manga girls and dope beats hey? Well enter, stage left, Dysphemic & Miss Eliza!

Dubbed “the pioneers of classical dubstep” (100% magazine) and soon to be smashing dance floors across the globe, D&E’s magnetic live show has been known to utterly mesmerize and leave punters screaming.

Blossoming in Melbourne Australia from a kiss in the depths of a drum and bass party, D&E’s obsession with music and each other spawned a juxtaposition; an outfit built on melodic complexity, slamming drums, violin virtuosity and double time rapping. All performed 100% live.

Want to know more about their cross genre sound? Well, D&E splice the likes of classical violin, dubstep, glitch hop, drum and bass and hip hop. Their slinky tune ‘Tunnel Vision‘ topped the Kiss FM charts, ‘Ramses‘ was revered as “bass driven ball bearing dubstep” (Beat magazine) and their lusted album ‘Synthetic Symphony‘ is set to drop in August. They’ve also supported Nero, Foreign Beggars, Andy C, Tipper, Beats Antique, Antennae, Dov, ill.Gates, Datsik, Plastician and everyone in between. PA-CHOW!

Frequently on the festival circuit and headlining club gigs, these kids have enough spunk and chemistry on stage to power a meth lab. With tours set for America and Canada (2012), Europe, Japan and The UK (2013), Dysphemic & Miss Eliza are a weapon shooting straight into the hearts and ears of dance floors worldwide.

Matrix & Futurebound

Matrix & Futurebound need little introduction, both having had illustrious careers in their own right. Matrix first broke through with his slick techno infused classic, ‘Sleepwalk’ album on Virus Recordings, later scoring chart acclaim under his house pseudonym ‘Goldtrix’ with the top 5 hit, ‘It’s Love Trippin’. Meanwhile, Futurebound had early success on labels such as Moving Shadow, Infrared, Hospital and Breakbeat Kaos before launching his own Viper Recordings in 2004, now recognised as a powerhouse in the bass music scene.

When Matrix & Futurebound combined their powers to unleash the seminal ‘Universal Truth’ long player in 2007, the skillful fusion of epic melodic soundscapes with heavyweight dancefloor production and original vocals defined a whole new era in DnB. Soon the likes of Swedish House Mafia, Justin Timberlake, Moby, Sasha, and Skepta soon knocking at the door for remix duties and a whole new generation of acts such as ShockOne, Brookes Brothers, and Camo & Krooked inspired to follow suit.

2011 saw the duo launch their ‘Worldwide’ mix compilation series which was the perfect snapshot of the electronic bass music landscape in 2011, keeping a sharp focus on the freshest drum & bass around whilst also drawing on dubstep and electro to capture the sound of a Matrix & Futurebound live set in all of its glory.

Now in 2012, Matrix & Futurebound have opened a new chapter as they work towards the release of their second artist album. The first single, ‘All I Know’ which features vocalist Luke Bingham was the first peak at the forthcoming project. Having cracked the official UK Top 40 charts at #26 and reigning supreme on BBC Radio 1 “B” and 1Xtra “A” playlist, the single sets the perfect tone for what is to come over the next 12 months from Matrix & Futurebound.

Luka Per aka Smooth was introduced to music at the age of 10, when he began to practice piano. After practicing for 3 years and later on he became more interested in guitar, also in such genres as metal, hardcore etc. When a couple of years passed by he attended his first drum n bass party and he was hooked!

It was very soon after that he decided not just to love this music but also to make his own tunes. His first release was ‘Lost Cause’ in 2005 on Touchin’ Down Records. As he researched sound more and more, he decided that his sound just wasn’t good enough, so he shut himself in the studio and waited until 2008 when his improving sound was noticed by Dementia. Together with Rregula they released ‘Obfuscate’ on Trust in Music 12″. Following this, he released ‘Space Attack’ on Recon and the massive ‘Out of Time’ on Ruse records.

fter hearing ‘Under The Moon’ which would appear on Viper Recordings ‘Acts of Mad Men’ album, Smooth was signed to the label and later went onto release his first single ‘7th Sense’ / ‘Squirm’ (feat. KG) on Viper’s sister label, Viper VIP. Smooth is also one half of Telekinesis who recently made their debut on Breed 12 Inch label, as well as one third of City of Dogs, whose track ‘Absolutely Flawless’ was featured on Pendulum’s Radio1 Essential Mix.

2011 has been Smooth’s breakout year, starting off with the massive single ‘Feel So Free’ on Viper VIP, which was followed by ‘Calling’ and Smooth’s absolutely immense remix of the Matrix & Futurebound classic ‘Strength 2 Strength’ on Viper’s ‘Worldwide 001′ album. This was followed by two tracks on Viper’s ‘Summer Slammers 2011′ album, with ‘Want It’ and ‘Alienated’ (as Telekinesis).

Now heading into 2012, Smooth is preparing to release his debut EP – ‘Blinded By The Light’ – due out in January and featuring ‘Shifting Sands (feat. Shaz Sparks)’, ‘Cosmos’ and ‘Cyberfunk’.
